    Agate Necklace

The Agate necklace is a traditional Malian wedding gift, often part of a young bride's dowry. It is  most elegant and translates easily into a stunning, contemporary piece of jewellery.  The agate comes from Idar Oberstein in Germany. Untill about the mid 18th century they had a mine in that area, when that was emptied they started importing stones from Urugay and Brazil, as they do untill now. Glass beads from Europe were valued in Africa as they were colourful, rare, not prone to decay in heat or humidity as shells, seeds and nuts are, and easy to use as adornment for nomadic tribes. The beads were traded for gold, ivory, palm oil or slaves.
