Trade Bead Necklace
This gorgeous Boheman glass necklace is shown in black/white here. It comes in various colour ways and is fastened by a brass clasp. It measures 48cm length. These Bohemian beads were made between 1900 and 1950 and exported mostly to Mali. Glass beads from Europe were valued in Africa as they were colourful, rare, not prone to decay in heat or humidity as shells, seeds and nuts are, and easy to use as adornment for nomadic tribes. The beads were traded for gold, ivory, palm oil or slaves.
