Malimali is a textile and clothing studio in the beautiful and ancient mud city of Djenné in Mali, West Africa . It was started in 2007 and is run by the Swedish/British designer Sophie Sarin, whose bold, simple and graphic designs draw their inspiration both from her Scandinavian roots and the magnificent environment of the Niger Inland Delta.
Malimali use an ancient and wholly organic dyeing and painting technique called bogolan , unique to this part of West Africa which produces a limited but beautiful palette of ochres and rust colours.
The studio team consists of men and women from Djenné, and apart from making beautiful products one of the aims of Malimali is to benefit the local population by providing work opportunities and also by engaging in various grass roots projects in health, education and culture in Djenné.
